Veterans Day 2024 – Disaffected Musings

Depending on the source, it is reported that between 16 million and 18 million military veterans are living in the US. Regardless of your political inclination, we should all be grateful to those who have served us in the Armed Forces.

I would be remiss if, again, I did not note that this was another missed birthday for Kevin Towers. He died of anaplastic thyroid cancer in January, 2018, not long after I began writing Disaffected Musings. He was the General Manager of the San Diego Padres for most of the time I worked there.

As I have written on more than one occasion, although he did not hire me he always treated me with respect and camaraderie. I will show this photo for not the first time. It is a picture taken in the visitors clubhouse in Los Angeles after we clinched the National League Western Division title in 1996.

Kevin is the one kneeling in the front; I am one of the other three people. One of the other three recently resigned from the Padres after working for the team for 29 years. He and I worked together with the Orioles during my entire tenure there from 1988 to 1994. I think he would not be happy if I pointed him out or mentioned him by name.

As beautiful though these photos may be, they show this morning’s sunrise, the scenes looked much more beautiful to me in person. Je me souviens…
